WHITETAIL DEER
As Lewis and Clark referred to them in their journals the “common Va. Deer”, the Whitetail buck is one of the most prized trophies of any hunter's trophy room. With deer population booming, liberal bag limits, and a long season with the use of a bow, muzzleloader and a rifle, Virginia is one of the premier states to have a successful hunt.
As with all our hunts, for management , quality and safety reasons, we hunt private leased land only. Our leases range in size from 100 to 1,000 acres plus, which allows us to adapt to conditions and wildlife movement and customize your hunt. Some of the biggest bucks taken each year come off a small tract that is seldom hunted. Spring gobblers are also known for not talking in one location and gobbling up a storm in another on the same day!!
It's our goal to take trophy bucks, mature bucks, 4x4 or better on each hunt. Our properties have different genetic lines. A mature buck on one property may be 115-120 B&C and on another 140 plus !! We will of course make exceptions for youth, novice, and management hunts. We will do the best we can to make your hunt successful, enjoyable and memorable.
Archery
Ashmont Outfitters offers a great bow hunt. With our western experiences on river bottoms such as the Powder, Yellowstone, Missouri and the Musselshell, as well as a lifetime of hunting in Virginia, we have learned a thing or two about stand placement, use of ground blinds, rattling and scent use. We keep areas and leases for archery ONLY, and for the serious bow hunters. Great opportunity for a P&Y buck!!
Muzzleloader
Virginia’s muzzleloader season is in the heart of the rut. A great opportunity for the buck of a lifetime, as bucks are chasing does all day. The weather tends to be mild, allowing the hunter to sit all day waiting for that opportunity. This hunt ,as with all our deer hunts, has a two buck limit. This is the hunt for the true trophy hunter and consistently the season in which the biggest bucks are harvested.

Our mountain terrain becomes more open during this period, leaves are
falling and the odds of spotting a deer at greater distances is possible with the use of good glasses and a keen eye. Virginia has a liberal doe season as well, which allows you to put some table fare in the freezer as well as helping us keep the buck doe ratio in check. This is a great hunt for the youth or novice hunter, not to say that trophy will not present himself, as there is more activity in the woods and the secondary rut falls
in the first week or so in December.
BLACK BEAR
Black bear are plentiful in this region despite what some might say or lead you to believe. Our surrounding counties are in the top 3 for bear population consistently year after year in the state. Opportunities may present themselves during one of our deer hunts, if you have been given the go ahead by your guide you may harvest one. We do offer a few hunts each year with the use of trained dogs. We will quote prices and details upon request.
FISHING
Smallmouth Bass
Float trips on the James River are the closest thing to floating the famed Madison or Yellowstone Rivers of Montana. We row rubber rafts set up to hold two fisherman. Whether fly fishing or spin fishing, you will enjoy great fishing, scenery, wildlife sightings and a memorable day. A great learning trip in reading currents that you can use later in your next wading trip, or in prep for that vacation trip out west. Fish range from one pound to four pounds. And yes, occasionally even bigger. If you have never experienced the top water action of smallmouth bass sign up now. We also use drifting techniques from the western trout streams that are a great addition to anyone’s fishing trip arsenal. When water levels allow, we also offer this trip on some of the smaller streams such as the Tye and Rockfish.
Trout
Virginia may not be as famous as some of the western states for trout, but it is rich in its diversity of trout streams. There are many well known Brook trout streams, the Rapidan, Mormans‘, Conway, St. Mary’s and Tye to name a few. Virginia also has spring creeks such as Mossy Creek that can offer a challenge for the dry fly purist who loves to stalk and cast terrestrial’s, emergers or midges to rising trout. Its also home to several larger freestone streams such as the Jackson, South and Maury River where everything from streamers to dead drifting tandem nymph rigs can be effective.
Fly fishing is one of our specialties, our guides are excellent instructors and very knowledgeable in techniques, aquatic life and reading water currents, all of which are key elements for a successful day on the river. Our 20 years of experience fly fishing in Montana’s premier trout streams, provide a great asset for us here in Virginia.
Lake and Pond Trips
This is a great trip when you only have a half day available or if you are a novice. Stationary boat and a stationary target help you get a easier start without the frustration . You can fly fish or spin cast on this trip as well. A great trip for youngsters!
